Adventurous Cableites head for the
Tehachapi Fly-In at Mt. Valley Airport

We picked a hot weekend, but that did not stop the hardy ones. The arrival of the “big yellow biplane” at Mt. Valley Airport a little before 8 am got Saturday, July 18, off to an early start and they kept on coming, A 150 flown by Don Jackson landed at Tehachapi Municipal, a Porterfield flown by Chris LaFave landed shortly at Mt. Valley, followed by a 172 with Richard French and Denise Early, another 172 with Joerg Geschke and Paul Houdayer. Geri Silviera had flown her Decathelon in on Friday as she was spending part of her time in her glider. As the camp got set up to make sure we had lots of shade, Bob & Susan Haines, Steve Madorsky and Roxie came in a 182; Tim & Judy Newsome came in their 182; Bob & Marilee in their Cub; and Ron Snedecor flew his motor glider—a turbo Ximango. Mike, Chris, Don, and Paul took glider rides. Lots of good lift on this hot day.

We can’t forget those who drove in, of course Chuck and Mary Barnett hosted this event as the mountains south of Mt. Valley is home to their 15 acre “ranchette”. Robert Paisley and Rebecca DeHoog came up in a motor home pulling an off-road jeep. Chris and Jerri Bergen and Kelsey came in a motor home. Greg Dillon and Stella Brandenburg stopped off for the two days on their way north and west site seeing.

The “big yellow biplane” caused quite a stir with the local residents. Many came by to check it out. Among those were a vintage car club. It helped that two of the members were trainees at the Test Pilot School at Edwards Air Force Base. They knew we were coming, because the AN2 is part of the Test Pilot curriculum as well as flying the gliders at Mt. Valley. They just snugged the cars right in around the planes. Of course the Porterfield, the Cub and the AN2 were the favorites. Great photo opportunities.

After seeing the day trippers off, the rest headed south into the mountains for dinner and a camp out. There were 17 sitting on the deck, looking out on the valley that evening. It had cooled off and made for a very pleasant evening. The next morning, people got an early start heading home with lots of good memories of their Mt. Valley Fly-In.

Early comer...Dennis Winegarner arrived on Friday and left Saturday morning...too much work.….and late comers Tim Probst and Walt Johnson flew up for breakfast on Sunday morning.
