DAN BUCHANAN AND HIS FLYING COLORS

Hailing from beautiful Minden, Nevada, Dan Buchanan flies one of the quieter aircraft on the air show circuit, a silent tow-launched hang glider. Releasing at 1,200 to 1,800 feet, he flies free. Watch and listen to his expression of the joy of flight, via a radio link to the audience, as he wheels, circles and dives to a stirring musical accompaniment. The performance concludes with a short but smooth landing on the aircraft’s two small wheels and leather skid pad. This big-hearted entertainer always throws in a few surprises during each performance. As he lands, watch him quickly move from glider to wheelchair, and move to the showline to sign programs and talk with the children.

ROB HARRISON, THE TUMBLING BEAR

Cable Airport’s own Rob Harrison will be popping in and out of puffs of white smoke, spinning, diving and twisting through the air in his specially built Zlin 50LX. The “Tumbling Bear” has been a marquee air show attraction since 1993 when he made the decision to embark on a new career after 28 years with the United States Forest Service, where he was responsible for the technical aspects of firefighting airplanes and helicopters. None are more enthralled with his airborne acrobatics than the kids. He typically is surrounded by youngsters passing out collector cards, pins, washable tattoos and other personalized giveaways.

FRANK DONNELLY, OLD TIME AEROBATICS

Another of Cable Airport’s own is Frank Donnelly who flies his 1946 Taylorcraft the way very few pilots fly aerobatics. He likes to give his audience the thrills that air show experienced in the 50s and 60s. The clipped wing Taylorcraft flies slowly and gracefully, rather that doing the abrupt, neck-wrenching tumbles of modern aerobatic airplanes that you will be seeing at this air show. Dr. D’s favorite aerobatic maneuver is the engine-off loop and rolls while still high in the sky, then coming in to land again with the engine off, stopping right in front of the crowd. Doing these aerobatic maneuver and landing with the prop stopped takes a lot of planning.

STEVE STAVRAKAKIS, ANNOUNCING IN 2010

Steve is an aerobatic pilot himself and earned the nickname “Wild Thing”. Along the way, Steve developed another very notable skill; his ability to take the microphone and transpose air show fans into the cockpit while announcing for fellow performers. As Steve says; “If you haven’t experienced 9 G’s, you can’t describe 9 G’s!” Steve has! Prepare to feel the G’s, taste the smoke oil, and land exhausted, as Steve puts you into the cockpit with our aerobatic pilots as they tumble through the skies, and into your hearts. This first hand experience, has landed Steve on the announcing stand of some of the largest, most prestigious air shows in the country including the National Championship Air Races in Reno, Nevada, and the Red Bull Air Race World Series for FOX. Sports!
