Maniac Mikes Café
One of those special times… Here at the café, we get many different requests to cater to private type gatherings and on September 1, a call regarding a birthday party gathering was no different, or was it?

A local man named John was celebrating his upcoming 50th birthday and he wanted it here at the airport. On September 11, his birthday, a number of people started gathering and I quickly noticed that there appeared to be about 5 young adults that were helping with decorations and that they were from other countries.

As the people gathered and mingled, I noticed that we were missing the man of the party. I inquired his whereabouts with his wife, Holly, and she informed me that he was home ill. Just 2 weeks ago, John was diagnosed with third stage colon cancer and his radiation made him ill. I then asked about the young adults and she informed me that they were all exchange students that had come to live with them for a year, attended Upland High School and have now moved on in their lives.

It seems as though when the kids got word of the grave illness of their California dad, they got in touch with each other, scheduled flights all to arrive at the same time and spend the birthday weekend here with John. These students had never met before and only know of each other through John and Holly’s giving’s. They spent over four hours here at the café, ate, drank and even got to fly with Captain Nick, many of which had never been close to small airplanes.

I found it to be quite the birthday present for a wonderful person, by the way, John did show up after about an hour and partook in the festivities in his honor. The photo is the extended family, which includes students from Austria, Spain, Argentina, Germany and Canada. Thank you to John and Holly for having the party here and sharing such a heart-warming time with me.
