Cable Air Show

Record Attendance

Far be it from me to figure out what the heck is going on. The USA in in a terrible recession. California has over 12% unemployment. Everyone knows someone who is out of work. Everyone knows someone who’s house is near, or has been foreclosed on. Everyone is pinching pennies and watching their eggs. But on January 9th and 10th of 2010, Cable Airport served up a pot of anti-recession elixir that, for a few hours, made us forget our troubles, made us count our blessings, and turned us all into smiling, grateful Americans.  Cool Huh?!

My favorite thing at the Airshow this year was the Pilatus Porter PC-6, flown by Clay Lacy. What a class act. Clay takes time from his busy schedule to put on a show for us! Not only was I completely entertained, but I was reminded that all us pilots and aviation buffs share a common thread, and no matter how rich or poor, we are bound together by these silly airplanes.

..........

Air Show  Highlights 2010:  Largest Attendance Ever; Bob Cable made his first ever parachute jump; P38 Lightning on display and made flybys; Rob Harrison is back in the air; Julie Clark made debut appearance; C-53 Skytrooper  breaks down for the 3rd year in a row; Mid air collision by the radio controlled airplanes was spectacular. No injuries other than two checkbooks.

Air Show Quotes 2010: “Is there a restroom in here?” (sign on Flying Club door says “No Restrooms Inside); Is there an ATM nearby?; Can I leave my child with you for 20 minutes while I go to the parking lot?; Have you seen my husband?; I used to fly one of those when I learned to fly; My cousin’s friend’s girl-friends’ next door neighbor’s brother-in-law’s sister used to take me flying in her high-wing, three-engine, retractable gear Cessna Skynanzamaster;
AND MY FAVORITE IS                   I always wanted to learn to fly………………..

Safe Radio Calls

Please think before you call.  Remember not everyone is from Cable. Better to report 3 miles North, than “at the dam”. Better to report 3 miles west than, “inbound on the VOR approach”.

Call "Cable Unicom" if pilots want a response such as requesting a radio check or landing advisories.

Call "Cable Traffic" when pilots are announcing position and intentions in the traffic pattern. A pilot should obtain a landing advisory prior to making their initial traffic pattern call.  With up-to-date information, the pilot's initial call will be made with the most accuracy.                                                                                                              David Franklin

Got a paper certificate? Replace it now.

If your FAA pilot certificate is printed on paper, it's going to expire on March 31, unless you replace it with a new plastic certificate.

To get the new counterfeit-resistant certificates, you have to fill out a form and mail it to the FAA in Oklahoma City along with $2 for each certificate you want to replace, or you can do it online. Either way, the new certificate won't list your original date of issue, so you might want to keep that old dog-eared piece of paper to prove your longevity.

If you apply by mail, it's going to take four to six weeks, and up to 10 days for online processing, so don't put it off till the last minute or you could find yourself grounded. Some nonpilot certificates, such as those for flight engineers and mechanics, are good for another three years but then they will also have to be replaced. Student certificates are not affected.

While you're at it, you can also ask the FAA to issue you a new certificate number that is not your social security number. There is no additional charge to make this change.
