As The Beacon Turns . .

Cableites have been busy with their projects; traveled to the far reaches of the world; joined together in the proverbial search for a fun place to fly for breakfast, brunch, or dinner; and taken that terrifying step into the wild blue yonder, trusting that their many hours of love and labor will hold together until they touch down again. Most of us other Cableites never hear about these adventures or possibilities. Along with other pertinent happenings affecting Cable Airport.…....As The Beacon Turns . . . . . . .

Adventures of Fly Aweigh

We're now in Mazatlan, "land of the deer" in the language of the pre-Spanish Nahuatl. The crossing from La Paz to Mazatlan, a 250 mile journey, was not without it's challenges. We left less than an hour before dark, as planned, so we'd arrive Mazatlan in the morning 40 hours later. But the seas were choppy and uncomfortable, and the wind was stronger than we expected or than was forecast, so when the sun went down with no moon, we lost our visual cues and peripheral vision, and with our bodies not acclimated yet to the motion of the rocking boat, we began to feel seriously queasy, a rare event for both of us. It was an uncomfortable first 10 hours with broken sleep, until the next morning, when the sun came back up, the seas calmed a bit, and the wind provided a great 13 solid hours of 6-knot sailing across the southern Sea of Cortez.

Bird Strike      December 24

In bound to DFW 18L, short final at 140 Knots, at the last minute I saw a very large flock of birds, most like Starlings on the ground just short of the runway. They became active just as I flew over them.

This wing tip landing light was deployed at the time. I had no indication there was an impact until post flight walk around. The strike residue indicated I hit four of them.

Bird strikes require lots of  forms to be filled out. We were on our way with a new light and washed wing (Feathers sent to FAA in a plastic bag) about 20 min late on a 40 min. turn around.

Rain in Ontario     December 14

Saturday Night Landing the DC 9 at ONT 26L in a rain storm. (tops only 12,000 feet). Heavy +rain, mod. turbulence on final, wind gust 200-220 degrees to 30 knots, broke out between 400 and 300 feet (200 is minimums). Runway was out at my right in the center windshield (I WAS ready for that). The wipers were on full both sides, they are LOUD, difficult to converse with the F/O. The runway looked "funny". There was so much water on the windshield and in the air it was like looking into a pool of water, bent light rays. (Night, remember). I was stable, checked the PAPI, still on glide slope, kicked (gently pressed) the nose straight just before we hit firmly on a soaked, grooved, crowned, runway. (Avoids hydroplaning/ great excuse). I was ready to go around.  WHEW, I need a beer!  Cleared direct: Tumbled Gyro ;-)  Steve
